Community Speedwatch Campaign

Community Speedwatch is a national initiative where members of local communities join with the support and supervision of their local police to record details of speeding vehicles using approved detection devices.

Westerham Town Council operates a Community Speedwatch campaign in conjunction with Kent Police.  Teams of volunteers, Councillors and town council staff capture and report details of vehicles travelling above the speed enforcement limit at locations in Westerham and Crockham Hill that have been risk assessed by Kent Police.

Registered keepers of vehicles exceeding the speed limit are contacted – initially with a letter explaining the potential risks and consequences of their dangerous behaviour. Repeat offenders will receive a visit from the local police, irrespective of where they live.

In 2025 we have carried out 30 Speedwatch sessions.

In roads with a 20mph speed limit:

• 33% of vehicles were exceeding 25mph
• Top speed of 42mph recorded

In roads with a 30mph speed limit:

• 14% of vehicles were exceeding 35mph
• Top speed of 56mph recorded
